DoDD 8570/8140 Baseline Certifications
The Department of Defense Directive (DoDD) 8570 was a formal policy enacted by the federal government that stipulated the criteria for training and certifying individuals who had access to specific information assurance tasks within the Department of Defense.
This directive was subsequently replaced in 2015 by DoDD 8140, which currently serves as the definitive policy, rendering the previous DoDD 8570 obsolete. The 8570 directive established the regulations and responsibilities of the DoD information assurance operations, outlining the necessary training, certification prerequisites, and related matters. The formation of the 8140 directive was influenced by the standards set by the National Institute of Standard and Technology and the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education.
Consequently, contractors, active-duty personnel, civilian staff, and other parties engaged with the Department of Defense’s information systems are mandated to gain certification in the respective courses, dependent on their job role and function.
