Course Duration

1 Day

Audience

Employees of federal, state and local governments; and businesses working with the government.

Prerequisites

Familiarity with machine learning concepts and basic Python experience recommended.

Course Description

In this workshop, participants learn how to implement multiple AI-based approaches to solve a specific, practical use case: identifying network intrusions for telecommunications. Participants work through three different anomaly detection approaches, comparing their strengths and trade-offs, and leave able to apply similar techniques to anomaly detection problems in their own domain.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the different types of anomalies and how detection approaches vary by type
  • Implement statistical and distance-based anomaly detection methods
  • Apply a deep learning approach to an anomaly detection use case
  • Compare and evaluate multiple anomaly detection approaches on the same dataset

Course Outline

1. Anomaly Detection Fundamentals
  • What makes anomaly detection different from standard classification
  • Types of anomalies: point, contextual, and collective
  • Evaluating an anomaly detection model's performance
2. Statistical and Distance-Based Approaches
  • Statistical methods for identifying outliers
  • Distance and density-based anomaly detection
  • Strengths and limitations of classical approaches
3. Deep Learning Approaches to Anomaly Detection
  • Autoencoder-based anomaly detection
  • Applying deep learning models to the network intrusion use case
  • Comparing deep learning results to classical approaches
4. Hands-On Lab and Wrap-Up
  • Implementing and comparing three anomaly detection approaches
  • Tuning models to reduce false positives
  • Final questions and key takeaways
